The Truth about Childhood Obesity

If the body mass index (BMI) falls between 25 kg/m2-30 kg/m2, the person is considered overweight. But once it goes beyond 30 kg/m2, then it falls under the obese category. Way back, this issue concerns adults. But with the evolving lifestyle of this generation, children are becoming more and more prone to obesity.

Obesity is actually caused by too much calorie consumption with no physical activities that burns the excess baggage in the body. Instead of having a well balanced diet, obese people often increase their intake for high density carbohydrates and sugar. Low protein and fatty meals often lead people unsatisfied thus increasing their cravings for food.

Children who are obese may suffer various complications along the way. They are prone to liver and kidney diseases, high blood pressure, asthma, sleep disorders, and diabetes. Statistics show that in the last two decades, children afflicted with diabetes raised to as much as 50 %. Aside from the physical health aspect, children may also encounter serious psychological effects.
